Should I go with blue or red highlights?

I have kind of dark dirty blonde hair, very rosy cheeks and blue green eyes.

I am afraid if I get red highlights, it will make my face look even more red. Then if I get blue it might make me look a little pale, or it will look weird.

So what color and what shade of it?Should I go with blue or red highlights?
Red.

Your face won't look too red, but it will warm it up. I suggest choosing the most natural shade possible, because not many people can pull off bright, colored highlights with blonde hair. And I definitely think blue will clash with your coloring. Auburn would look good because it isn't too dramatic and it can bring out the gold in your complexion.Should I go with blue or red highlights?

Right now i have med brown hair and i love it dark. The cut I'm getting is very retro it's a heavy bang with a short bob (cheek length) but stacked a bit in the back . Well, it actually depends on what natural hair colour you have. If you are blonde, or red-haired, your skin might be light. If you've got light skin, black could turn out, especially if you've got light eyes. But I'm not so sure about the reh highlights.. they are not for light-skinned people. You could try out something lighter, like brown or blonde. What do you think?

Yes, I guess your employer can do this, but there should be certain Terms and Conditions in your contract, such as a dress code and what is deemed as appearing 'presentable' for work and in your place of work, and this could be interpreted in many ways.

My advice would be: if your job is important to you, and you like it - don't do anything to jeopardize your position. Some employers are more rigid in ideas than others.

If having red or purple highlights are also important to you - do a compromise, and use highlights that you can paint in on a weekend, or for an evening out, but ones that you can wash out before going back into work. There is 'hair mascara' available purely for this purpose.

i would consult Human Resources about it first. if you still have a copy of your contract it should state it there. why not try a temporary dye first to try out the colour. like a wash in wash out one for nights out. i know lots of friends who do this. everybodies happy
I would check your contract and even double check by asking if it is not stated what is and not allowed particularly as you are working with and will be seen by the public ie visitors etc.

no, not unless she lightens the areas that she is going to put the highlights in but you cannot dye over black hair and expect it to show that is like using a black maker and adding a yellow or red marker, you wont see the color

well, i haven't seen your skin tone but i would suggest a 3rb.

go to your stylist, or ask around for a good one if you don't have your own. ask to see samples of those colors, you might not know what those letters and #s mean but a decent stylist will.

of course i'm only a cosmetology student and not a real stylist yet so your best bet would be to head to a real stylist, where they can look at the color, texture and porosity of your hair, and compare colors w/ what would work best w/ your skin tone.

I think so. That haircut is more sophisticated and classy and i think it looks better either one color or blonde or caramel highlights. You do what feels right so you can get it cut first so you can get used to it and then see if you would like to add a different color to it.

I have done this by copying the color item and pasting it in using MS Paint after the whole picture is b%26amp;w.

You have to have two pictures to do it my way. 1 B%26amp;W and 1 color.

Tip: when you go to paste it in, use the zoom tool to get an acurate paste.How do you make pictures look black and white but still highlight a certain color..like red?
b%26amp;w is often meant to be grayscale and not duotone bitmap,

with photoshop , you can open a copy of colored image, ~duplicate layer, then desaturate second layer to remove color, then erase areas on b%26amp;w , for color from lower layer to show through,

~if you were trying to get all of one color, use selection of color range on color photo layer, then select b%26amp;w layer then delete highlighted,

~you could also select areas to leave color, invert selection and adjust hue/ saturation,

~ you could also select areas with lasso tool and copy and paster over b%26amp;w image,

..
Well some programs basically just come with a tool .. But i do it the 'hard way' i select the parts of the photo i WANT to be black and white , and click black and white . And i select around all the parts i want to keep color , and dont make it black and white

Since you have some blonde highlights naturally, I would honestly try a blonde, but if you have your heart set on red, try going with a strawberry blonde, or an auburn. Don't try anything too drastic until you see the red with your skin tone, you can always darken or lighten the color when you go to get your roots touched-up.

depending on your skin, there are different base colors you can chose from like gold, orange, red, brown.. it all depends on your skin tone but you could definatly pull it off!

i recommend you go to a sally beauty supply store and look at some swatches against your skin tone, talk to someone and get ideas and suggestions. :)

You mean bright red? Assuming you have blonde - brown hair that hasn't been colored many times over, here's what you do: Go to the beauty supply store and buy black dye, level 20 developer, a packet of powder bleach (I prefer loreal super blanc), level 40 developer, red/gold corrector, a bottle of red manic panic or punky color dye, two mixing bowls, two brushes to apply color, gloves, and a processing cap. You'll also need aluminum foil, vaseline, good conditioner, and an assistant. First, tear the foil into strips- about four inches wide, and a bit longer than your hair. Mix 1 part bleach, two parts 40 developer, and about a teaspoon of red/gold corrector in one bowl. Section out the hair that you want to color red and clip the rest out of the way. Using a strip of foil under the hair, apply the bleach evenly to thin sections of hair and fold the foil up on it. Put on your processing cap and process for 30 to 40 minutes total, whatever it takes. You can speed the process up by heating it with a blow dryer. You should do this if your hair is darker than about a level 6. When the bleaching is finished it should be a light chicken yellow color. After the bleach has processed for about ten - fifteen minutes, mix the black color with 20 developer in the other bowl (check the box for the correct ratio).Start at the bottom, applying black color to each row. you don't need to put foil on each section, just protect your neck by putting vaseline along your hairline and sticking a piece of foil to it. Make sure you apply the color evenly. Put your cap back on and let that process along with the bleach for about 20- 25 minutes. When you rinse it, you need to keep the blonde parts away from the black, or your blonde will turn gray. I recommend holding the blonde- still in foil- above your head while you rinse the black out in the shower. When the water is clear again, you can rinse the blonde out. Shampoo and condition with a quality after-color conditioner. Dry your hair, then apply the red color to the blonde sections. It doesn't need to be mixed, and if it gets on the black it won't affect it. Process according to the package directions. Rinse, dry, and you're done. Bright red dye is never permanent, so if you want it to stay vivid you'll have to reapply it every week or two.How can i get red highlights and black highlights without going to the hair salon?

Try the clip in extensions. You can get good human hair extensions in loads of different colors and if you don't like them you can take hem out. Plus, they last a long time if you take good care of them.

Or, if you must dye your hair the easiest way for you to do it at home, by yourself is to use a cap/frosting cap which you can purchase at a beauty supply store such as Sally's for less than $4. This is only effective however if you have medium length hair or shorter as it is impossible and painful to try to pull longer hair through the cap. Also, if you are desiring chunky highlights, you must go to the salon.

Pull desired hair through cap. Lighten hair using bleach (also supply store, under $4) with a 40 volume developer. Rinse hair and KEEP CAP ON! Dry hair you just lightened and apply red hair dye and time--again rinse with cap on (to avoid affecting other hair). Remove cap and apply a new one. Pull hair through again (avoiding new red strands) and apply blk dye, time and you get the idea.

This is VERY time consuming and much easier to do a single color.

Dying your own hair is very trial and error and I would advise that going to a salon is best and will produce good results if you do not understand what you are doing There are other methods but this is the most fool-proof I can think of if you are a first timer.

i wouldn't go blonde at all, as you have red hair (like me) then it has the tendency to turn brassy or orange in colour and that's not good. Go for highlights in shades of red, start with copper, strawberry blond, pillar box red, then start going darker, think of autumn leaves and go for those colours, very pretty!
ask your stylist. either way your new highlites/color will turn red (brassy) cuz of your natural red.

My opinion is that you will probabyly look best in red or black. But you could probably pull of many different colors. Here are a few sites with some really hot dresses. Just picture yourself in one!!!!
You didn't mention your skin tone color, so try going with a basic black or red. Maybe try a royal blue, or lavender.

I think you should get them pretty dark. Because too red it will look orange go with a redish brown like Burgundy. You should go and get a consultation with a hair stylist it should be free.

Well unfortunately red hair color pigments fade faster than any other color. Other than using a red enhancing shampoo and conditioner and trying not to wash your hair everyday, there isn't much you can do. When I've colored someone's hair with any red, I warn them that unless they have natural red in their hair, the pigment won't hold for too long. You could try hving your hair colored back to its natural color and then re do the highlights but its time consuming and possibly costly.I put red highlights in my hair, but its starting to turn a bronzy color how can i fix it?
get it done proffesionally again use color care shamoo and use bumble and bumbles hair powder in between touch ups it is good for roots and just giving a nce burst of natural looking color and if you an't afford to go to the salon every 6 weeks then use an at home kit in between
Red hair is a hard color to keep you will have to recolor it either at the salon(stays longer) or with an at home coloring kit when it fades.

If you go with at home you can try to add some of the color into your conditioner like at a 1:5 ratio so that everytime you wash your hair some color stays on. That's just what happens with vibrant colors they will always fade and need maintenance.
Red is a difficult color to maintain depth and luster.. As reds fade faster than other shades.. You can add some of your color to an ounce of shampoo, and do what is called a ';soap cap';. Shampoo with the mixture, and leave on for about 10 minutes, then finish shampooing as usual.. This will add some of your red depth, luster, and color back to your hair. and cut the brassiness of your faded color.. It is less damaging on your hair, and you can do this as frequently as you wash your hair, if your color requires it, until time to recolor using the regular peroxide based color.. Its an old salon trick and it is very successful.. (former salon owner)..

I am a dark brunette and I went to the salon and asked for them to highlight my hair red. Natural red, not the primary color. Unfortunately, I didn't realize in the salon (I thought it would fade, lighting, etc) that it has come out like the primary color and I look like a punk rocker lol. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get it out? Any help is much appreciated!

If you went to a salon, go back to the salon and tell them how you feel about your highlights. You paid for a service, you deserve to feel like a satisfied customer. You shouldn't have to pay anything extra for them to fix your hair. Tell them you are unhappy with the highlights and would like to make them more subtle or try to erase them by making the strands more like your natural hair color.

Salon employees aren't perfect, so they should understand. They should have first shown you a swatch of what the color would look like or look close to.

I wouldn't try fixing it yourself unless you dye the strands black so that the red doesn't show through (however, overtime the red undertones will shine through if you don't dye the strands right and you'll have brassy-looking strands).How do I fix/get rid of bright red highlights? you have 2 options. 1. you can try to tone it so that it is more your natural color.

2.bleach it and dye over it. although bleaching it and dyeing over it is not the best idea if you just got your hair done. you should wait at least a week.
Go back to the salon. They have a lightening process.

Honestly, that really depends on what hair color your hair is. Depending on it, it could work if you put it on really lightly so it doesn't show that much or you could put it on maybe a single strand or something like that.

You would have to dye the parts you want red blonde first, otherwise the color won't take.

The way stylists achieve that look is by dying the entire head blonde first, then sectioning off highlights red, and then adding the black. You have to work in reverse. You might even need to strip the color off pieces.

I want to avoid a hair salon as much as possible and use an at home highlighting kit but I cant find one anywhere. Go to Sally Beauty Supply or another supply shop. You will need 30 volume peroxide and bleaching powder. Generally you mix the same amount 2 oz. powder and 2 oz. peroxide in a mixing bowl til it is smooth. Wear gloves. The best way to do this is take a rat-tail comb and pick out pieces you want to bleach out to take color, brush on the creme with a color brush and seal them with saran wrap. Processing depends on how dark you hair is. You can check after 15 min. and keep checking every five minutes, but you don't want to damage the hair. Keep checking until it is bleached out well enough to be a light blonde. Wash hair.

Manic Panic in the red you want will be used on top of these bleached out pieces. This is not a peroxide type color. Use old towels with all of these products and wear clothes you do not want damaged.

Get hair bleach. And bleach the strands you want done.

Then buy some red hair dye. (ask the sells person to help you!) They can help you out alot.
i would go do it professionally, when your highlight it yourself, you will have noticeable drip marks on your hair...it does not look goo at all and yes, everyone notices, please get it done by a professsional, its alot of money but its totally worth the hassle
yes ther is such thing, i forgot wht brand but i kno it has this shower cap like thing with little holes in it and u have a hook to pull hairs from the holes and u dye the hairs on the outside and the cap will prevent the inside from the color

I currently have red %26amp; blonde streaks on dark brown hair...they look great. But what my stylist suggested was lighted my base color (dark brown) which made everything blend together better. Also, Red is the hardest color to ';keep';. It fades pretty fast, so just be aware.

So, basically I have blonde highlights, mahogany (red) streaks %26amp; low lights (making my dark brown lighter). It's actually a great combination ecspecially when the light hits it.

yes you should get it professionally done cuz you don't exactly no what kind of color you will wind up with if you go with a non professional color, trust me i work in a salon and have had to try to fix many of colors that have been done by box or other than professionally done, not exactly easy. if you want highlights go to Cost Cutters and ask to see their colors you can do just about any color on black hair. If you don't want to use bleach, then use a high lift color to get the same effect without the damage that bleach can do.
My college roommate had black hair and it looked absolutely beautiful with red highlights. You definately should have it professionally done. I think that you have to have the part of your hair that will be red bleached first, but they use foils so that only the parts that are being dyed red get bleached--not your whole head. Go to your hair salon and see a stylist for a consultation he/she should be able to explain the procedure in detail and tell you how your hair will react to the different chemicals.

You can't get a vibrant red, without stripping your natural colour 1st. It will be more of a red tint.

Hahahha. I have a natural brown tint to my hair and the only way to bring it out is to use shampoos and conditioners for color treated hair and it works like a charm. Also, when my hair is very healthy the brown reveals itself, too. When my hair was damaged then it was very dull and very dry looking, with no brown tint.

I think Pantene has a line for different hair colors, so you might want to see if they have a line for red hair and use that to see if it works. People can ony see my tint in the natural sun light.

red fades really really fast, so itll show up really good at first, but dont wash it too much, and when you do make sure you have a really good shampoo for coloured hair, and youll probably hafta redo it quite a bit to keep the colour up, atleast every 3 weeks probably,
the highlights will be very red if you die them very red. if you use the store bought dieing products then eventually the redness will wear out but your blondness will be more bleached and will look like a different shade of blonde compared to your natural color.
the red tends to wash out after a while and become a pinkish color i don't think there is anything you can do to make it last longer but your best bet would be to ask a hair stylist

When they start to fade out, they could turn to pink, especially if your blonde has been bleached. Have you tried extensions? They make really cool colors and you can just take them out when you want a change.
when it fades, it will turn a peach kind of color. red dye is one of the most difficult dyes to remove from hair. you could use a hair glaze. it will make your hair appear shinier and more vibrant.

the only thing that will work is stripping out the colour then dying a light ash brown over top, or going to a decent hairdressers if you have the cash and get it all done again.

if you can wait - you could use a cheapish shampoo to help tone down the dark brown, as you say they stripped the colour out of your hair then applied the newer dark brown, theres a good chance this dark brown will fade drastically, because dye nearly always does over top of bleached hair! good luck with whatever you choose to do xxx
If it's a dark color the only way to strip it, unfortunately, is to bleach again. I know from experience. I died my hair black and went to have it professionally lightened and the stylist couldn't do it. Dye only coats the outside of the hair, so if you put light over dark, the darkest color will show through. Since you recently had it colored, it wouldn't be safe to do it again so soon, because your hair could break off. You could try complaining to the salon owner if what you got was not what you paid for, or call the better business bureau. One thing I've heard you can do at home is the buy Head%26amp;Shoulders shampoo. Put a ton of it straight from the bottle on your hair and leave it on for 20+ minutes. Do this several times. It's said to lighten dye. I tried it and got minimal results with black dye, but brown isn't as dark so it might strip more of the color. Good luck!
there is a phrase used in my industry that states ';colour will NOT lighten colour'; which means that any colour that is lighter than what you currently have will NOT work on your hair. you will need to bleach to the orange stage and then tone with a level 5 ash (blue based) colour. blue is opposite to orange on the colour spectrum so will neutralise the orange tones so you will end up with light neutral brown.

Hi, I use red/auburn henna from the body shop (available elsewhere) for a completely natural way to dye your hair, it's also very good for your hair and gives great healthy shine and body. This is not highlights obviously it just blends in to the natural tones of your hair, i'd recommend a professional stylist for streaks etc, they do use natural dyes if you ask.

Yes, it could be the shampoo you are using.

Use a colour locking shampoo and conditioner duo, also use a colour lock mask once a week.

I recommend pantene pro v colour lock shampoo and conditioner, and i recommend garnier fructis colour lock hair mask. They both help your hair colour stay longer, and they will bring the shine back to your hair.

Another factor that contributes to colour fading is salt water, chlorine, and the sun. When you are out in the sun try to keep your hair covered OR like me, you could use a special heat protectant balm that has UV filters built in to protect your hair from both heated styling tools and the sun. Also, before you go swimming, soak your hair in fresh water. The fresh water fills up the hair folicle so that once you go in the water, your hair is already full so the salt water or chlorine cannot enter your hair folicle and damage it...it works just the same as a sponge, once you fill it up, no more water can enter it.

Well red is the most fading-est color. And some colors fade to red, before they lighten to orange and go away, as a weirder orange, to beigey or barely brown.

You needed to set it, or fix it with a fixative rinse after you got it colored.

Then use a colorfast shampoo, that retains and emphasizes all color, and is light on 'detergents' or soap.
i was dying my hair fire engine red for months.. and geez.. it fades so fast..

first of all.. wash your hair in cold water only.. this kind of sucks but it made my color last weeks longer..

regardless though.. red is the smallest color molecule.. so it's going to fade.. you could bleach your hair out first to make the color more vivid.. but that's horrible for your hair..

don't leave conditioner sit on your hair either.. shampoo cleans the surface of your hair.. but conditioner goes into your hair so it kind of saps the color out.. that's what i was told at least.. i could be wrong..

I know the look you are talking about and in my opion its quite beautiful.

The exact colour that you end up with depends largely on the exact colour of your hair, and if you have dyed your hair already or not.

I would recommend having it done at a salon. They will show you samples of different colours (on hair strands) so you can pick which shades you like the best, and then they will custom mix it depending on your existing colour etc to get the desired effect.

But if you wanted a cheaper way, you could talk to the cosmatician at the local pharmacy and get her opinion. It might not turn out quite as you imagined, but it would be a cheaper alternative.

Be careful with reds though, I would recommend using the special shampoos and conditioners designed for red hair. Red fades the quickest of all dyed colours, and could turn orangish or pinkish in no time if not taken care of properly.
